Stress-Free Tips for Your Newborn Photography Session in Ottawa

Bringing home a new baby is an exciting and emotional time—and preparing for your newborn photography session might feel like one more thing on a long to-do list. The good news? It doesn’t have to be stressful.

As an experienced newborn photographer in Ottawa, I’ve guided hundreds of families through this process. With just a little preparation, your session can be relaxed, enjoyable, and result in beautiful, timeless portraits of your baby’s earliest days.

When Should You Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session?

The best time to prepare for your newborn photography session is before your baby arrives. Ideally, your session will take place within the first 6–14 days after birth, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those sweet, posed positions. According to the Canadian Paediatric Society, newborns spend the majority of their early days sleeping, which is why this timeframe works so well for a newborn photography session.

By planning ahead, you can focus on your baby (and yourself!) once they arrive, instead of scrambling to organize details.

What to Bring to Your Newborn Photography Session

One of the biggest concerns parents have is: What do I need to bring?

If you’re working with a full-service newborn photographer in Ottawa, most items are already provided for you—but here are a few essentials to have on hand:

  • Extra diapers and wipes
  • A pacifier (even if baby doesn’t normally use one)
  • Bottles (if bottle feeding)
  • A change of clothes for parents
  • Any meaningful personal items (heirloom blanket, special toy, wedding rings, etc)

Your photographer will typically provide wraps, outfits, headbands, and props–so there’s no need to overpack.

How to Prepare Your Baby Before the Session

A well-prepared baby = a smooth and relaxed newborn photography session.

Here are a few simple tips:

  • Keep baby awake for 1-2 hours before the session (if possible)
  • Feed baby right before arriving (if your drive is less than 30 minutes), or once you get to the studio (if your drive is more than 30 minutes).
  • Dress baby in a loose sleeper that zips or snaps in the front and avoid anything that must go over the head to remove. No tight socks or diapers to avoid marks on the skin.
  • Avoid face & body lotion on photo day. Babies are notorious for dry skin, however it is much easier for us to remove the dry skin in post-production than to deal with shiny/greasy skin.
  • Avoid diaper cream on photo day. If we will be doing some poses without the diaper the cream tends to stain our fabrics and it is also extremely difficult to retouch off the skin.

A full, sleepy baby is much easier to pose and will help us capture those peaceful, curled-up images.

What Should Parents Wear?

For family and parent images during your newborn photography session, simple is best.

Recommended:

  • Neutral tones (cream, beige, soft grey, white)
  • Soft textures and minimal patterns
  • Coordinated (not matching) outfits

Avoid:

  • Bold patterns and logos
  • Bright colours that distract from baby

What to Expect During Your Newborn Photography Session

A typical newborn photography session lasts between 2–3 hours. This allows plenty of time for:

  • Feeding breaks
  • Diaper changes
  • Soothing and settling baby

The pace is always baby-led—there is no rushing. Your only job is to relax while your photographer safely guides your baby through each pose.

Many parents are surprised by how calm and peaceful the experience feels.

How to Prepare Yourself (Yes, You Matter Too!)

You’ve just had a baby—give yourself grace.

Here’s how to make your experience more enjoyable:

  • Get as much rest as possible the night before your session
  • Eat before your session
  • Trust your photographer (you don’t need to “perform”)
  • Let someone else handle the details

Remember: these photos are about capturing your connection, not perfection.

Should Siblings Be Included?

Absolutely! Including siblings can create some of the most meaningful images from your newborn photography session.

A few tips:

  • Prepare young children ahead of time
  • Have them meet the photographer ahead of time
  • Bring snacks and a quiet activity
  • Consider having another adult available to take them home after their portion is done

This keeps the session smooth and stress-free for everyone.

Final Tips for a Stress-Free Newborn Photography Session

To recap, here’s how to set yourself up for success:

  • Book early with a trusted newborn photographer in Ottawa
  • Pack only the essentials
  • Keep baby full, warm, and sleepy
  • Choose simple, neutral clothing
  • Relax and trust the process

Your baby will only be this tiny for a short time—these images are an investment in preserving those fleeting moments forever.
